What happened after high school?
I completed a BSc in Neuroscience and Physiology at the University of Toronto, where I also competed with the Varsity Blues Swim Team. I then attained an MSc in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany. There, I conducted research in cancer immunotherapy and gene therapy. I am now a medical student at the University of Alberta with a keen interest in pediatrics and clinical research.
What do you remember from the Discovery Day event and what impact did it have on you?
My most vivid memory of the Discovery Day was learning from the anesthesiology residents and getting to use an ultrasound to examine the blood vessels in my own arm. I was blown away, and this experience convinced me that a career in medicine was something I wanted to aim for. Eight years later, as a current medical student, I look back at this experience as one of the most pivotal moments in my pursuit of medicine, and I am glad to know that my 17-year-old self is absolutely thrilled that I made it here.
Any advice for high school students?
Wherever you are, never stop learning and enjoying every bit of the process! Though I am still nowhere near the end, my path here has been full of exciting challenges and immense growth. Regardless of the direction you choose, have the courage to step out of your comfort zone and seize opportunities as they arise. See every challenge as a chance to show what you're made of, and don't be afraid to ask for help and lean on those who have your best interests at heart. There will always be people rooting for you!
