A renowned expert in evidence-based treatment of lung cancer

Frances A. Shepherd, MD, is widely considered one of the most influential figures in lung cancer research and treatment. Through landmark clinical trials and the integration of molecular science into oncology, Dr. Shepherd has established evidence-based systemic treatment strategies across all stages of lung cancer. As the Scott Taylor Chair in Lung Cancer Research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, she designed and led numerous clinical trials, many of which changed the treatment of lung cancer globally. Her work showed that post-operative chemotherapy can increase the cure rate for early-stage lung cancer and that molecularly targeted therapies can improve survival outcomes, even in the most advanced stages of the disease. Dr. Shepherd was also deeply involved in developing tumour banks, enabling further research into lung cancer at a molecular level. In addition to her role at Princess Margaret, Dr. Shepherd served as President of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, as Chair of the Lung Cancer Committee at the Canadian Cancer Trials Group, and with several other prestigious boards and associations. Colleagues consistently describe her as a gifted clinician-scientist and mentor, committed to developing the next generation of researchers.
