Spotlight on CMHF Award Recipient: Dr. Adam Mosa
We are pleased to feature Dr. Adam Mosa, MD MSc FRCSC, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at The Hospital for Sick Children and the 2016 Queen’s University CMHF Award Recipient.
Dr. Mosa specializes in hand surgery, microsurgery, and facial reanimation. After completing medical school, he pursued a plastic surgery residency in Toronto, followed by an Orthopaedic hand and microsurgery fellowship in St. Louis, Missouri. His practice combines technical precision with a deep commitment to patient-centred care.
Reflecting on the CMHF Award
Looking back, Dr. Mosa recalls that the award helped solidify his early career ambitions. “I remember thinking that with this recognition and honour, I should push myself to apply for plastic surgery residency, which at the time was a remote possibility and nascent ambition,” he says.
While completing his CMHF Award application, he recalls writing, “On completion of medical school, I hope to train as a pediatric plastic surgeon.” Looking back, he reflects, “At the time, I really struggled with whether to include something so bold before I had even been accepted to residency—but I’m glad I did.”
Evolving Passion for Medicine
Over the years, Dr. Mosa’s focus has evolved from broad medical interests to surgical mastery. “I have maintained my excitement and passion for medical communication and the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship, but over the years, I have evolved to place heavy emphasis on technical expertise and the attainment of surgical mastery, which is a career-long ambition,” he explains.
The Award's Impact
The CMHF Award also played an important role in shaping Dr. Mosa’s career trajectory. “It tremendously bolstered my sense of confidence that pursuing Plastic Surgery would be worthwhile. It was mentioned in many CaRMS interviews and certainly helped me achieve my current position,” he reflects.
Advice for Current CMHF Award Recipients
His guidance to future recipients emphasizes active engagement in their training. “Approach every part of medical school with enthusiasm and care. Finding your specialty and calling is a matter of active exploration and not passively realizing where you fit. Dive in headfirst!”
Opportunities Resulting from the Award
Dr. Mosa has also maintained professional connections with his fellow awardees. “Many of my colleagues from the same cohort of awardees ended up in Toronto, and I continue to see them in clinical settings,” he notes.
Dr. Mosa’s journey illustrates how early recognition, combined with curiosity and persistence, can help emerging physicians navigate the path to surgical excellence while sustaining a commitment to patient-centered care.
