Spotlight on CMHF Award Recipient: Dr. Andrea Jones

We are delighted to feature Dr. Andrea Jones, MD, PhD, a Neurology Resident Physician and Postdoctoral Fellow in Neuroepidemiology in the University of British Columbia (UBC) Clinician Investigator Program, and the 2015 UBC CMHF Award Recipient.

Dr. Jones is completing an integrated clinician-scientist training program that combines her neurology residency with a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroepidemiology. Her work focuses on advancing brain health equity through innovative research and high-quality clinical care for some of Canada’s most vulnerable communities.

Reflecting on the CMHF Award
Looking back on the award, Dr. Jones recalls the induction ceremony as a deeply meaningful experience. “It was particularly special to share the experience with my parents,” she says. “I had the opportunity to meet the incredible new laureates and the other amazing awardees. That moment remains a highlight of my training.”

Evolving Passion for Medicine
Dr. Jones’ integrated training allows her to pursue a multifaceted career as both a clinician and a scientist. “Through my clinician-scientist training in neurology, I aim to advance brain health equity through innovative research and quality clinical care for the most vulnerable communities,” she explains.

The Award's Impact
Receiving the CMHF Award reinforced both her confidence and ambition. “The award reminds us that our work is done on the shoulders of giants who have trailblazed in challenging times. It gives me the confidence and fuels my ambition to pursue a multifaceted clinician-scientist career in brain health equity,” she reflects.

Advice for Current CMHF Award Recipients
Her advice to future recipients emphasizes perseverance and strong mentorship. “You can do this! Persevere, stick with your values, and nurture your relationships with strong mentors and your loved ones,” she says.

Opportunities Resulting from the Award
Dr. Jones notes that the award also provided important visibility and networking that supported her academic trajectory. “This award lent visibility and networking to help advance my application to this unique integrated clinician-scientist training program,” she says.

Dr. Jones’ journey demonstrates how the CMHF Award can empower emerging clinician-scientists, fostering confidence, mentorship, and connections that help drive meaningful change in health care and research.
