A leader in genomic ethics and governance

Bartha Maria Knoppers, PhD, has fundamentally shaped how genomic medicine is developed and used. Throughout her career as a medical-legal scholar, bioethicist, and policy leader, she has worked to ensure that scientific advances are anticipated by policy frameworks. For more than four decades, Professor Knoppers has contributed to various fields, including pediatric genomics, rare diseases, newborn screening, precision medicine, biobanking, and genomic data sharing. She played a vital part in initiatives such as FORGE Canada and Care4Rare Canada, which combined advanced genetic testing and international collaboration to help identify rare diseases in children. Her work has also addressed important questions about informed consent, including children in research, and using health information responsibly. During her tenure at both L’Université de Montréal and McGill University, Professor Knoppers founded the Centre of Genomics and Policy and helped establish CARTaGENE, Canada’s first large-scale population biobank in Quebec. She was also a co-founder of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH), developing international policy and tools for sharing genomic and health data. Through her forward-thinking scholarship and ethical leadership, Professor Knoppers continues to bridge scientific innovation and public accountability, ensuring that genomic medicine progresses in ways that preserve human dignity and public trust.
