What happened after high school?

I went to the University of Manitoba for my undergraduate degree and graduated in 2023 with a BSc Microbiology degree. During my time in undergrad, I became involved in several opportunities, such as serving as a council member for multiple clubs, being a teaching assistant for a first-year biology course, and conducting research. I applied to medical school at the University of Manitoba, and thankfully got in on my first try. I am now in my third year of medical school, just starting clerkship. I have also had the opportunity to conduct research with the BSc Med program offered by the University of Manitoba.

What do you remember from the Discovery Day event and what impact did it have on you?

I remember taking part in workshops, such as seeing a research lab for the first time and participating in a session that showed examples of what doctors do in the office. I found both workshops very interesting. I consider myself lucky to have been able to get involved with both since attending Discovery Day. I also remember a part when I was in the big lecture hall (Theatre A) and told myself that I would make it to the Bannatyne Campus one day. I remembered that moment during my orientation week when I sat in that same theatre. Discovery Day had a big impact on me. I chose to volunteer for Discovery Day when I was a first-year medical student in 2023, and I saw students from my former high school attending too. It was a surreal moment.

Any advice for high school students?

My biggest piece of advice for high school students is to get connected with mentors in professions that you are interested in pursuing. When I was in my undergrad, I joined mentorship programs and attended information nights about medicine. I owe a lot to the people who gave me advice to get to the place where I am. At this point in my training, I still have mentors whom I ask for advice. To pay it forward, I am always open to advising others.
