Spotlight on CMHF Award Recipient: Dr. Dylan Ginter

We are proud to highlight Dylan Ginter, MD, BSc, Pediatric Intensivist at the Health Sciences Centre and Winnipeg Children’s Hospital, and the 2016 University of Saskatchewan CMHF Award Recipient.

Dr. Ginter completed a subspecialty fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care at The Hospital for Sick Children, followed by an advanced sub-fellowship in Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) care. He now leads the implementation of an ECMO initiation program at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital—an essential life-support service for critically ill patients. Continuing to advance his expertise, Dr. Ginter has been accepted to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Health in Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, beginning in June 2026.

Reflecting on the CMHF Award
Looking back, Dr. Ginter remembers the experience as both inspiring and affirming. “It was a great time to network and learn from a very distinguished group of physicians who helped shape the field of medicine to what it is today,” he says. “I was very honoured to receive this award, and it is still one of the highlights of my medical training.”

Evolving Passion for Medicine
Since receiving the award, Dr. Ginter’s career has evolved toward high-intensity, hospital-based care. “I work less with global health needs overtly like I used to,” he explains, “but the patients I see are very affected by the social determinants of health. I recognize the need for on-the-ground, grassroots efforts to improve the quality of life for some of our patients—it’s still desperately needed.”

While much of his focus is now on critical care, he continues to look ahead to broader global health involvement. “I deal with more critical care and less preventative medicine, but I hope to continue my work with global health in some capacity moving forward,” he adds. “My master’s degree will certainly help with that as well.”

The Award's Impact
For Dr. Ginter, the CMHF Award provided an important boost early in his medical journey. “It gave me great confidence,” he says simply, adding that while the award did not alter his career path, “it reaffirmed that I was heading in the right direction.”

Advice for Current CMHF Award Recipients
His advice to future recipients is straightforward and full of optimism: “Be inspired. Reach for the stars. Don’t let that spark fade. Keep up the good fight. It’s worth continuing to push hard to make the lives of our patients better.”

Opportunities Resulting from the Award
Although no specific professional opportunities arose directly from the award, Dr. Ginter remains deeply grateful for the experience. “I did not stay in touch. No significant opportunity came up from it, but it was still a great honour,” he says.

Today, Dr. Ginter’s work reflects a balance of compassion, technical excellence, and forward thinking. Whether at the bedside or through his upcoming studies in epidemiology, his ongoing dedication to pediatric critical care and global health continues to make a lasting impact.
